The Truth About Matte Makeup: How to Get a Long-Lasting Matte Finish Without Drying Out Your Skin
Matte makeup has gone in and out of trend across many eras of beauty, and it’s definitely one of my favorite looks. As an artist who grew up in the 80s, I absolutely love a flawless matte base paired with bold pops of color. The constant challenge, however, has always been how to create and maintain this finish without causing excessive damage to the skin. Traditional matte products often lead to dryness and clogged pores, which has long been a frustrating issue for beauty lovers.

Does Matte Makeup Dry Out Your Skin?
From the early days of stage makeup, when huge talcum powder puffs were pressed heavily onto the skin, anyone who wore this type of makeup experienced a cycle of tight, dry skin followed by midday oiliness. The more powder we applied, the oilier our skin seemed to become.
By the 1980s, major beauty brands launched matte liquid or cream-to-powder foundations, bringing a whole new set of problems. The skin would feel tight, dry, and almost cracked right after application, only to turn shiny and greasy by noon. Given the technology available at the time, these issues were hardly surprising.
The simple truth is that any product that uses drying ingredients to achieve long-lasting matte results is destined to fail. Skin is a living, breathing organ that senses moisture loss. Our body’s natural response to drying formulas is to produce more oil to compensate, creating an endless cycle of oiliness and over-matteing. In the process, pores become clogged, and the complexion ends up looking heavy or cakey.
The good news is that the beauty industry has evolved. Brands are no longer just developing ways to control oil—they’re creating formulas that do so without harsh damage to the skin. Unsurprisingly, as a pioneer in skincare-makeup hybrids, jane iredale has been at the forefront of this shift.
Smooth Affair Mattifying Primer: Matte Finish Without Dryness
This year, we’re thrilled to introduce the latest evolution in matte technology: our brand-new Smooth Affair Mattifying Primer. What makes this primer truly exceptional is that it controls oil effectively while improving skin health and texture, giving you the smooth matte finish you’ve been wanting.
The secret behind Smooth Affair Mattifying lies in its high-performance ingredient blend.
We start with Hibiscus Esculentus Extract, which boosts skin elasticity and locks in moisture. This ingredient also supports the skin’s natural repair process, leaving it looking refreshed and youthful.
Next, we add Rose Geranium Leaf Extract, which helps protect and repair the skin from UV damage while providing powerful antioxidant benefits.
The key ingredient for a balanced matte effect is Red Algae Extract. It not only regulates sebum production but also maintains the skin’s natural oil-and-moisture balance for a smooth, shine-free finish.
We also include Titanium Dioxide to help create a perfected, even surface.
Beyond the nourishing benefits of these ingredients, this formula delivers outstanding long wear, even for those with sensitivity or reactions to traditional primers. We’ve intentionally left out common irritating ingredients found in conventional mattifying products. The final result is unlike anything you’ve tried before, and we’re confident you’ll love both the finish and the feel on your skin.
